What Is GEO? Why ChatGPT Doesn't Mention Your Company (A Plain-English Guide for Hong Kong SMEs)

You search your own company name on Google — page one, there you are. But when you ask ChatGPT, in a customer's voice, "which company in Hong Kong is good at this", it names five — and you're not one of them. That's the reality facing many Hong Kong SMEs in 2026, and the practice that solves it is called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) — still blue ocean in Hong Kong. This article skips the jargon and focuses on what you can do today.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the practice of making your website's content easy for generative search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews to read, trust, and cite. The core is three things: structured data, clear direct-answer passages, and AI-readable files (such as llms.txt). It moves you from "impossible" to "possible". WKH bundles "Get You Found" into its Hong Kong web design package.

Why are you on page one of Google but invisible to ChatGPT?

You're on Google's page one but missing from ChatGPT because the two pick source material in fundamentally different ways.

Google ranks: it lines up hundreds of web pages by relevance and slots you into position. Even a mediocre website can stand near the front with enough links and enough years behind it.

Generative AI like ChatGPT and Perplexity summarises: it doesn't show you a list — it reads a few sources, then answers in its own words. Its selection criterion is "which source most easily gives me one clean sentence to lift". If your site is all adjectives, with no sentence that directly states what you do, who you help, and what it costs, the AI skips you and picks a competitor who says it clearly.

So the problem isn't that you're not good enough — it's that your website doesn't state how good you are in a way AI can read.

What's different across the three eras of search?

Search has moved from "directory" to "ranking" to "answer" — and each generation demands something different from your website.

Traditional era (~2005)SEO era (2005–2023)GEO era (2024–)
How customers find youYellow pages, referrals, remembering your URLType a keyword into Google, click the top fewAsk AI one full question, take the answer
The website's roleDigital business cardRanking battlefieldAI's reference material
How you winHaving a site at allKeywords, links, speedClear structure, direct answers, credible data
What losing looks likeNo websiteStuck on page 3AI answers the question — without your name

The three eras don't replace each other; they stack. You still need a website, and you still need Google to find it — there's just one more layer now: getting cited by AI. WKH's What Is the WKH GEO Website page has a fuller comparison of these three eras.

Which websites does AI cite, and what does ChatGPT look at when recommending companies? 3 conditions

AI picks websites to cite based on three things: can it read the structure, can it extract a direct answer, and does it trust the source.

One, structure (readable). An AI crawler isn't human — it can't look at a picture and guess the meaning. It relies on HTML heading hierarchy, schema structured data, and clear division of labour between pages to understand what you are. A website with everything crammed into one long homepage image is, to AI, effectively blank.

Two, extractability (an answer it can lift). Every question needs a passage that stands on its own. "We provide quality professional services" is not an answer; "We build 3-page websites for Hong Kong tutoring centres, HKD 6,000, launch onboarding included" is. What AI loves most is FAQ-style, one-question-one-answer content.

Three, credibility (safe to cite). AI platforms are afraid of citing the wrong thing, so they check: whether your company name, address, and phone match across your website, Google Business Profile, and social accounts; whether authors and dates are stated; whether real case studies exist. A website with contradictory business details — AI would rather not cite it at all.

None of these three conditions needs a big budget, but each one needs someone to do it properly, once.

5 GEO things Hong Kong SMEs can do themselves today

No need to wait for an agency. Here are 5 GEO checks you can run yourself today, all free.

  1. Ask the AI once, in a customer's voice. Open ChatGPT and Perplexity, ask the 3 questions your customers would ask ("which company in Hong Kong does X", "how much does X cost", "how to choose X"). Note whether you appear and who gets cited. That's your baseline — without a baseline you can't measure progress.
  2. Make sure every page has one direct-answer sentence. First paragraph of Home, first paragraph of Services: one sentence stating what you do, who you help, and the price or pricing model. Delete the adjectives.
  3. Check that your business details are consistent. Company name, address, phone, opening hours must match character for character across your website, Google Business Profile, IG, and Facebook. One page saying "Ltd" and another "Limited" already costs you points.
  4. Add an FAQ section. Take the 5 most-asked customer questions with your answers, publish them in question-and-answer format. This is the format AI cites most easily — and the one fewest businesses do.
  5. State the author and date. Every article, every page: a real person's or team's name, and a date. When AI judges credibility, anonymous undated content ranks last.

The SEO fundamentals in our earlier article Four Strategies to Improve Your Google Search Rankings still apply — these 5 things are one more layer on top.

What does WKH's "Get You Found" actually do?

"Get You Found" is one of the 3 Web Employees in WKH's HKD 6,000 package. During launch onboarding it completes 5 things, moving your site from "AI can't read it" to "AI can cite it".

  1. AI-citable formatting — rewrites your services, FAQ, and business details into a question-answer, one-task-per-page structure
  2. Structured data setup — Organization, FAQPage, Article and other schema, so AI doesn't have to guess
  3. Business data consistency — aligns company name, address, and phone across your website, Google Business Profile, and social accounts
  4. AI-readable files — sets up llms.txt, confirms robots.txt isn't blocking AI crawlers, and completes the sitemap
  5. A one-page baseline report — "does AI mention you today": three to five customer questions, each AI platform's answers, and who got cited. You can then rerun it yourself monthly.

Honest disclosure: what WKH's "Get You Found" delivers is GEO groundwork for Hong Kong SMEs — not a guarantee. No service can guarantee that ChatGPT or Google AI will cite you, and AI answers can differ every time. Also, Google has stated repeatedly that it does not use llms.txt; we implement it anyway because ChatGPT and Perplexity crawlers have been observed reading it, and the cost is near zero. FAQ

What is the difference between GEO and SEO? Do Hong Kong SMEs need both?

SEO gets Google to rank you higher, with the goal of a human clicking through; GEO gets generative AI to read, trust, and cite you, with the goal of your company appearing inside the answer. The two share a lot of foundation (site structure, clear content, consistent business data), but GEO adds layers: structured data, direct-answer passages, and AI-readable files.

How do I know whether ChatGPT mentions my company?

The most direct way is to test it yourself: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode three to five questions in a customer's voice — say, "which company builds tutoring centre websites in Hong Kong" — and note whether you appear and which URLs get cited. Do it once a month and that becomes your AI citation baseline. WKH's "Get You Found" hands you a one-page baseline report like this at launch.

Does doing GEO guarantee ChatGPT will recommend me?

No. Nobody can guarantee citations or rankings on AI platforms, and AI answers can differ every time. What GEO does is prepare the conditions for being cited: structure, extractability, credibility. A prepared site gets cited far more often than an unprepared one — but "far more often" is not "guaranteed".

What is llms.txt? Does Google recognise it?

llms.txt is a plain-text file in your website's root directory that lists, in plain language, what your company is and which pages matter, so AI crawlers can understand you quickly. Google's John Mueller has said publicly, repeatedly, that Google won't use llms.txt; but ChatGPT and Perplexity crawlers have been observed reading it. The cost is near zero, so WKH does it — without claiming it's a silver bullet.

Is GEO worth it for a small company?

Worth it — and smaller companies actually have an edge. Big-company websites are usually sprawling and messy, more than AI can digest; a 3-page site where each page says one thing clearly is far easier for AI to cite. That's exactly why WKH bundles "Get You Found" into the HKD 6,000 package: for SMEs the cost is tiny and the payoff is high.

How long does GEO take to show results?

The technical layer (schema, llms.txt, answer passages) can be done in one to two weeks; but AI platforms recrawl and update their knowledge on their own schedule — anywhere from days to months. So WKH recommends a citation test once a month after launch, reading the trend over 3 months rather than drawing conclusions in 3 days.
