AI Overviews Arrive in Hong Kong: 5 Changes Your Website Needs
In July 2026, HSBC VisionGo published 1 article titled "The Cure for a 30% Traffic Crash". The same month, TechCrunch cited Similarweb data showing Google AI Overviews had risen from 15% of searches to 43% within 1 year. In March, cnyes reported that several technology media outlets had lost over 85% of their search traffic. You may have seen these headlines, but most of them are about media and large companies. This article is the Hong Kong edition of AI Overviews: what it actually means for 1 Hong Kong SME, and the five things your website needs to change.
The 5 things a Hong Kong SME website must change in the AI Overviews era: 1. Put a direct answer that can be quoted on its own in the first screen of every page; 2. Add an FAQ section with FAQPage / Organization schema; 3. Keep business data consistent across every platform so AI dares to recommend you; 4. Make sure robots.txt does not block AI crawlers and the site is fast; 5. Ask AI once a month in a customer's voice and keep a record. The goal shifts from "ranking first" to "being mentioned by AI", which is what AI search optimisation means. WKH's 3 Web Employees each take 1 layer at launch.
What Happened? 3 Numbers and Their Sources
What happened between 2025 and 2026 can be summed up in 3 numbers: 43%, 85% and 30%, each describing a different group.
43% — AI Overviews coverage. On 27 July 2026, TechCrunch cited Similarweb data: the share of Google searches showing AI Overviews rose from 15% a year earlier to 43%. In other words, in nearly half of searches, users get an answer before clicking any link. (Other research firms put the figure at 48% to 55%; WKH conservatively uses the single Similarweb source.)
85% — the drop in media traffic. On 9 March 2026, cnyes reported that several technology media outlets saw search traffic plunge after AI Overviews launched, some by more than 85% and individual outlets by over 90%. In July 2026, Yahoo Finance cited Chartbeat data showing publishers' Google search traffic fell 34% in 1 year.
30% — the HSBC VisionGo warning. On 8 July 2026, HSBC VisionGo published "The Cure for a 30% Traffic Crash: Google's AI Search Overhaul and How Businesses Can Save Themselves with GEO", one of the few local Hong Kong articles about GEO to come from a financial institution's platform.
The 3 numbers describe the same thing: search has gone from "giving you a list" to "giving you the answer directly", and whether you appear in that answer is the new battleground. Source links are at the end of the article.
Why Does AI Overviews Affect HK SMEs and Media Differently?
Media and SMEs are affected by AI Overviews in opposite directions: media traffic falls because AI answers the information directly; for SMEs the risk is not traffic, it is AI recommending competitors and not you.
Media rely on "informational" searches: "what is GEO", "what are the new iPhone features". AI can read a few articles and answer these questions itself, so users do not need to click through, and a sharp traffic decline is inevitable.
SME services rely on "transactional" searches: "which tutorial centre in Kwun Tong is good", "how much does web design cost", "recommended beauty salon in Central". When AI answers these, it cannot stick to concepts; it has to recommend specific companies and cite specific prices. At that moment, the companies that get mentioned receive 1 customer already pre-screened by AI.
Overseas research (Contently, April 2026; Previsible, 2025) suggests visitors referred from AI answers convert to enquiries at two to four times the rate of ordinary search, because AI has already explained things to them before they arrive. This is overseas data; Hong Kong has no comparable statistics yet, so treat it as a reference only.
So for SMEs, the question changes from "what position do I rank" to "when AI answers my customer, is my name there?". For the full concept of GEO, start with What Is GEO? Why ChatGPT Doesn't Mention Your Company.
What Are the 5 Things a Website Must Change in the AI Overviews Era?
Of the 5 changes below, the first 4 are one-off setups and the 5th is a monthly habit. All of them map to the 3 conditions AI uses to choose a source: can it read you, can it get an answer, and can it trust you.
1. One direct answer in the first screen of every page. AI picks sources on the basis of "who makes it easiest for me to lift 1 clean answer". Make each page's most important question the heading, then answer it directly underneath in 60 to 80 words: what you do, who you help, what it costs. Delete all the adjectives.
2. FAQ section + schema. 1 question, one answer is the format AI finds easiest to cite, and the one fewest SMEs use. Add five to 8 questions customers genuinely ask, with FAQPage schema; add Organization schema for company data.
3. Consistent business data on every platform. Company name, address and phone must be identical, character for character, across your website, Google Business Profile, IG and Facebook. AI is afraid of citing something wrong; if a company's data is contradictory, it would rather not mention it.
4. AI crawlers can reach you + the site is fast. Do not block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot or Google-Extended in robots.txt; make the site load quickly, because AI crawlers are no more patient than people.
5. Ask AI once a month and record it. Three to 5 customer questions, asked on the same day each month to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode. Note whether you appear and who gets cited. Look at the trend over 3 months.
For the specific steps behind the first 4 of these, 7 Things That Make AI Understand Your Website has a step-by-step checklist.
3 Things You Should Not Do
Faced with AI Overviews, 3 common reactions are wrong, and will waste your money.
1. Stop doing SEO and switch to "GEO". Google's own AI optimisation guide is very clear: SEO fundamentals remain the core of its AI features. The websites AI Overviews cite mostly rank well already. GEO adds 1 layer; it does not replace the foundations.
2. Block AI crawlers to "protect content". Some media outlets choose to block GPTBot so their content is not used for free. That may make sense for a publisher; for an SME whose business depends on being recommended, it is suicide. Block AI and AI recommends your competitor.
3. Buy a "guaranteed AI ranking" service. Nobody can guarantee that ChatGPT or Google AI will cite you; AI answers can be different every time. Anyone who promises that is being dishonest. What GEO does is prepare the conditions, turning "impossible" into "possible".
How Does WKH Build a Next-Generation Website for AI Overviews and Google AI Mode?
A website fit for the AI Overviews era is no longer 1 pretty business card; it is 1 asset that goes to work: readable by AI, catching customers on its own, maintaining itself.
WKH breaks this into 4 layers: the content layer (direct answer and FAQ on every page), the structure layer (schema, llms.txt, business data), the lead layer (form, WhatsApp, auto-reply) and the technical layer (speed, security, AI crawler access). The 3 Web Employees each take 1 or 2 layers at launch and set them up during onboarding, so the foundations of AI search optimisation land in one pass.
The visual and experience trends in our earlier article 5 Web Design Trends for 2025 still hold, but in 2026 there is 1 extra reader: AI. The What Is a WKH Next-Generation Website page has the full account of the five big shifts and the four-layer structure; to get started straight away, go to WKH Web Design Plans and Pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Have AI Overviews already appeared in Hong Kong?
Yes. Google has been progressively rolling out Gemini and AI features to Hong Kong users since March 2026, and AI Overviews are now appearing in both Chinese and English searches, though not on every query, and the proportion changes month to month. WKH suggests manually checking 10 searches relevant to your business each month and noting whether an AI summary appears and who it cites.
Is SEO dead?
No, it has changed shape. Google's own AI optimisation guide states that SEO fundamentals remain the core of its AI features, and the websites AI Overviews cite mostly rank well already. What has changed is the goal: it used to be ranking first so people would click; now it is being readable, trustworthy and quotable to AI. Same foundations, 1 more layer.
Media traffic fell 85%. Will my small business suffer the same?
The impact works differently. Media rely on "informational" searches ("what is X"), which AI now answers directly, hence the steep traffic decline. SME services rely on "transactional" searches ("who does X", "how much is X"), where AI has to recommend specific companies, so the ones that get mentioned actually benefit. Your risk is not falling traffic; it is AI recommending a competitor and not you.
Should I stop doing SEO now and do GEO instead?
It is not either/or. GEO is built on top of SEO: site structure, speed and clear content are shared foundations, and GEO adds layers such as schema, answer paragraphs and AI-readable files. Stopping SEO to do GEO is like tearing out the foundations to build the second floor.
How does the WKH plan map to these 5 changes?
The 3-page website in the HKD 6,000 plan is built on a "1 direct answer per page" structure; Get You Found handles schema, llms.txt, business data consistency and the baseline briefing at launch; Keep You Standing handles speed and AI crawler access. 4 of the 5 changes are completed during launch onboarding, and we teach you to do the 5th (the monthly log) yourself.
